The following are the key dates that you need to be aware when open enrollment and why they are important.
November 1, 2015
This date marked the beginning of open enrollment. While you can register anytime between November 1 st and 31 January st , the sooner you register, the sooner your coverage can begin.
December 17, 2015
Typically, the last day to register or change plans which come into force on January 1 st is 15 December e . However, Healthcare.gov granted an extension of 48 hours due to unprecedented demand, giving people more time to buy policies. If you miss this deadline, your new coverage will not begin until February 1st st .
1 January 2016
As mentioned above, if you register or change plans on December 17 e , your 2016 coverage will begin on January 1 st .
January 15, 2016
This is the last day to register or change in plans for a new coverage to begin Feb. 1 st . If you miss this deadline, your new coverage will not begin until March 1st st .
January 31, 2016
This is the last day you are able to enroll in or change health coverage. If you miss this deadline, you can not have health insurance coverage for all of 2016. The only exception to this is if you are eligible for a special enrollment period. To qualify, you must have lived some life events such as child birth, adoption, marriage or divorce. You have 60 days after a qualifying life event to apply for health coverage in the special enrollment period.
