iStock_000008669797Small My neighbors recently bought a trampoline for their children. Shortly after they met on trampoline, my children asked if they could jump. They were very surprised by my answer. Although many parents may see the trampoline as a fun and engaging way for children to exercise, the risk of serious and catastrophic injuries should make you think twice about this activity.

My neighbors tried to convince me that the trampoline is a safe activity, especially with the safety net. While the net does not reduce the chance of being thrown out of the trampoline, there is no security. The truth is, most injuries occur due to collisions with other children, bad landing or landing on the side rail. You've heard the expression, "What goes up, must come down", and due to the laws of physics, plus one child jumps, the more impact.

The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System estimates that 98,000 trampoline injuries occurred in 09, the latest year for which statistics are available, resulting in 3,100 hospitalizations. About 75% of trampoline injuries occur when multiple people are jumping with children five years and unless a greater risk of significant injury. This risk increases when you have a small child jumping with older children. Fractures and dislocations account for 48% of injuries. common injuries in all age groups include sprains, strains and bruises. However, serious injury, life-changing, such as the spinal cord and nerve damage may occur.

Many people do not recognize the risks or even the liability associated with having a recreational trampoline. Most home insurance policies have trampoline exclusions charge a higher premium, or the mandate they are in enclosed areas with restricted access. And let me be clear: I am referring to outdoor trampolines; . Not those in gymnastics centers under the direct supervision and guidance or small indoor models used for core-toning

Here are some safety measures to reduce the risk of injury by jumping on Recreational trampolines:

  • children under 6 years should not be allowed to jump.
  • allow only one rider at a time.
  • Leave no flips or tricks.
  • jump should always occur under the direct supervision of a competent adult who is willing to apply and to moderate the trampoline rules.
  • do not be lulled into a false sense of security just because a trampoline safety nets or other protective equipment.

As you can guess, my answer was a firm "NO" to my children. As parents, we must make unpopular choices. But provide a safe loving environment where our children can become healthy adults is our most important.

Do you have a trampoline? What was your experience?
