Autumn is here and the baseball season is heading towards its conclusion. I grew up playing baseball and like always follow the game on many levels. My father was my baseball coach in my younger years, both in court and formally for my youth league team. Last year, things came full circle when I began the softball team coaching my daughter.
I could go on for some length about the personal significance of training for me, but my goal here is to answer some questions that I considered seriously until I started training. Is there a risk of liability involved in sports coaching youth on a voluntary basis? Do I need additional insurance to ensure that I am protected in case of an injury to a player or an unusual complaint made by a parent of young athletes?
The answer to the first question is a resounding "yes". With metal bats used, hit balls in play, and the hard slide into bases, there is always the possibility of an unexpected injury. It may be unlikely that injury would be serious, a parent or a volunteer coach continue after an injury, but if a wound is serious enough to warrant this type of action? A parent may have signed a waiver that protects the league, but it is unlikely that the agreement protects an individual coach.
Regarding the issue of insurance, some organizations may offer you the opportunity to get coverage through a coaching certification program. If this type of coverage is not available, your personal insurance comes in. A good policy owners provide a personal liability coverage, usually in an amount ranging from $ 300 thousand to 1 million dollars. To an unintentional injury, the policy will protect and defend you up to the amount of coverage purchased. Keep in mind, because of the conditions of the policy, the coverage will not be available in most situations for a coach who is compensated.
