7 ways to protect your privacy online -

It is undeniable that the Internet has probably touched nearly everyone you know. With ongoing advances in technology and social media, the Internet can be a great place to spend some time. But as people connect with more gadgets more often, there is a growing concern for cybercrime and maintaining online security.

You might be (unknowingly) allowing thieves to spy on you through your electronics as many toys and gadgets come with insecurities of privacy, which makes it easy for a hacker or thief to break. These gadgets may include items such as smart TVs, popular Xbox Kinect, webcams, and even baby monitors. And do not forget your car - think of all the technology that comes standard these days! Your personal computer is still at risk because there are viruses or thieves can create programs to steal information that you enter into it.

While it can be scary to think, there is no need to live in fear of hackers and identity thieves. Here are seven ways to fight and keep your personal information secure and safe online:

  1. Always use a password with at least eight characters. Make sure to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and at least one symbol.
  2. Never save passwords in your web browser.
  3. Use trusted antivirus software on your computer, such as McAfee or Avast.
  4. Never enter personal information into a website that is unsecure or looks unprofessional. URL of a secure website should begin with "https" instead of "http". The "s" at the end means "secure" and uses a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).
  5. Clear your webcam when not in use.
  6. When using social or other communication media applications like Skype or FaceTime, only accept friend requests from people who know you and trust.
  7. identity thieves like your credit cards to keep this information private and do not share, especially when using an ATM or entering your card number online. Also, just like your passwords, do not save your credit card online.

There are many other ways how you can stay safe online, but I would like to hear what you have ideas! Please share your suggestions in the comments below and stay safe out there on the internet.
