Independence Day is just around the corner and many people celebrate with cookouts. While some people enjoy outdoor barbecues throughout the year, summer is finally the most popular time to grill. The best way to enjoy a summer outdoor barbecues is to take steps to prevent accidents, including the maintenance of your grill and use it safely.
The Insurance Information Institute provides a long list of grilling tips to help you avoid injury this summer:
- Turn your grill on a surface flat, away from your home, garage and landscaping. Do not move the grill once it is lit
- Keep children and pets away from the grill.
- Protect yourself with a heavy apron and oven mitts that reach high on the forearm.
- to charcoal grills, only use lighter fluid designed for grilling. Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids, and never add lighter fluid once the fire started.
- Never grill indoors or in enclosed spaces. Charcoal grills produce carbon monoxide (CO) fumes, which can be fatal in unventilated areas.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
- When finished with your kitchen, remember that the grid will remain hot for some time. Do not cover or store your gills until it has cooled down, and soak the coals with water before disposal.
Of course, accidents can still happen and injuries must be treated immediately. Run cool water over minor burns, but does not cover areas affected bandages, butter or ointment. For more severe burns, victims should visit the emergency room or an urgent care center. If necessary or if in doubt, call 911.
Once you have treated injuries, assess your damage and if the situation requires, contact your insurance agent to discuss filing a claim. According to the US Fire Administration, about 5,700 grill fires occur on residential property each year, resulting in an average of $ 37 million in damages and thousands of injuries, some fatal. The fire that is caused by inadvertence is a risk covered by a homeowners policy, subject to your policy deductible. Typically, an owner policy covers the following after the deductible of the policy is applied:
- The damage to the house itself or other structures, such as a shed
- damage to personal property such as patio furniture
- injury to a guest, as part of the responsibility of the policy (the deductible is not applicable to civil liability)
Make sure you enjoy your summer barbeques; not to burn this season by practicing safe grilling techniques. Bon Appetit!
