Slip and Fall When preparing to leave for work, I was watching the weather forecast and was amazed to see that the temperature will be in the years 60 this week! It's unusual for December in the Midwest. If we do not get snow where Santa will land his sleigh? Although it seems that we will have a brief respite until the snow begins to fall, we'll probably know slippery conditions and snow in the coming winter months. For business owners, this means that slips and falls can occur, and sometimes a boss can be seriously injured as a result. Not a fun way to spend the holiday season!

So what that a business owner to protect against slip and fall accident? A very easy way is to shovel snow and use salt to melt ice on sidewalks. Also, make sure the outdoor walkways are free of standing water because they can and freeze, creating yet another slip and fall hazard to your customers.

Another useful tip is to use warning signs on wet floors caused by people tracking in the snow. Let you customers know that the area can be smooth and dangerous. However, just placing a sign that there is not enough! You must make an effort to keep clean and dry area as possible. Not only will your customers might slip and fall, but so could your employees.

If you are a business tenant, make sure to review your lease. You can be contractually responsible for tasks such as deleting timely snow and gateways providing are safe and clear of all hazards. Even if the owner is responsible for these activities, be prepared to clear the pavement for safe passage if the snow is stacked and you're about to open your business.

Remember, your customers are invited meaning they were "invited" to your property to do business. Safety begins with you - the business owner - so put on galoshes and proposes that the snow! By taking a few proactive steps, you can better assure customer and employee safety. We will all have a season safe holiday season!
