In the coming weeks, university campuses across the country will be stuck full of excited children and parents who weep as these students move into their new quarters for the school year. Many students get their first taste of living on their own. Here are some safety tips to share with students to help keep them and their belongings safe during the school year.
- DO keep your dorm room door locked at all times. Many children will keep their doors unlocked when visiting a friend a few rooms away, thinking that no one enter their room if they are gone for a few minutes or are so close to their room. This can not be further from the truth. Many electronic devices are small and portable and can be stolen in 30 seconds if left unattended. If you make a quick trip to the bathroom or hanging out in the next room, keep your door locked.
- DO NOT leave candles / incense unattended. candles and incense are great on college campuses. Small rooms crammed with at least two people may feel a bit eccentric, so many students use these elements to help refresh the air. Leaving these unattended when lit can be a huge fire hazard. The flame is not the only problem with candles and incense. The heat from the candle and incense ash is enough to start a fire.
- NOT remove dryer lint lint before starting the dryer. Many students, I am sure, are used to Mom and Dad do their laundry. Living in college is their first experience with washing and drying their clothes regularly. Dryer fires are common on college campuses because many students do not clean the lint filter in the dryer and remove pills correctly. Dryer lint is as kindling and can catch fire from the heat put off by the dryer. Make sure you clean the lint filter before turning the dryer every time you use it.
- DO plug electronics into power protection and save all work frequently. There is nothing worse than being until 02:00 finishing a paper of 20 pages only to have your computer turned off or short before you have saved your work. Protection against overvoltage will help you keep your electronics to be fried because of an overload of your neighbor hairdryer. Save your work often will help prevent a collapse late night when the computer because the battery dies or someone launches plug.
- Do not post when you are away on Facebook or other social media sites. In Mad company social media today, many people think nothing of displaying their plans, even if it means they will be away from home for a weekend or longer. If you post that you're going home for the weekend, which can give someone who sees this position the opportunity to enter your room and steal you blind. Posting on social media do not like to tell your friends your plans. It is closer to viewing your shots in the newspaper.
Some of these tips may seem like common sense, but they are all derived from actual incidents. Many people have this old "it will not happen to me" mentality, but these situations can and do happen. Do you have other safety tips for students to protect themselves?
