Dawn entered his office on Black Friday. Thanksgiving was a lot of fun. It was good to catch up with family, some of whom had flown in from across the country. Dawn, the financial director of a retailer of medium height, had done a lot of work to get the company ready for the holiday season sales. She was aware that the majority of the company's annual sales have been generated this time of year.
Shortly after she sat down, there was a call from Tom, the chief information. "Dawn, we have a big problem! We just discovered that our website has not worked since Tuesday! None of our customers can log on to our site to do business! It seems we have a denial-of-service attack on our site! "
Aube realized immediately it was a big problem. She was heavily involved in the promotion and financing of the launch of the new online sales system of the company, hiring IT consultants to develop the online sales site and realignment of staff and resources to implement the new online inventory management system. Worse, the majority of sales of the company in the future were supposed to be generated by the new platform for online sales! And she promised Sheila, the CEO, this new online sales system would be a home run. If this was not resolved quickly, the company's annual sales could take a big hit.
"Tom, lets set up an emergency meeting with Sheila and get to the bottom of things. This must be resolved rapidly"
Denial of Service (DoS) attack is an on-line computer system of a company by hackers that makes it unusable and unusable system. A particularly destructive type of DoS attack is a distributed denial of service (DDoS). A DDoS attack is an attack on an online system that overwhelms the target system with data and traffic from multiple sources, either slow or completely stop the system.
The costs and consequences of a denial of service (DoS), in particular a distributed denial of service (DDoS), can be considerable:
- a 2012 study shows that 65 percent of the sites that suffered DDoS costs outages incurred $ 10,000 of time [1]
- a recent survey shows that over 60 percent of companies say that when disruptions occur DDoS, service customer is more affected than any other department. [2]
- A study shows that 55 percent of goals suffered the theft of funds, customer data or intellectual property attacks by denial of service. [2]
- If a company suffers a DDoS attack, there is a 87 percent chance you'll get hit again. [2]
- in a 2014 survey of 450 companies in North America, 60 percent of these companies reported experiencing a DDoS attack in 2013, against only 35 percent in 2012. [3]
- DDoS attacks can do damage to customer service, revenue online reputation and sustainable brand. [4]
denial of service attacks can inflict serious damage on revenue and reputation of a business and can lead to theft of funds and customer data. It is also possible that an attacker could commandeer your computer systems to launch denial of service on a third, expose you to lawsuits by third parties. Indeed, you can be accused of complicity in a denial of service on another company! Put simply, you have a first and exposure to third parties as part of a denial of service.
Many risk of cyber offerings include coverage for denial of service. Along with this, you should also consider buying a solution of cyber insurance that includes public relations services (more on that here). This can help to solve the damage of a denial of service could cause the reputation of your business with your customers.
When shopping for a cyber insurance coverage, talk to your independent insurance agent on a cyber product to address denial of service. Do not be end up like Dawn
