In the north, the term "ice dam" is filled with grimacing faces and curse words. for those of you blissfully unaware of its significance, an ice dam is ice accumulation on roofs that causes damage to the building if water leaks through. the last winter has wreaked havoc for many, but with warmer temperatures finally stick around, people began to repair the damage.
with home repairs booming it is a good time to think about making other improvements to your home to protect against future problems of ice dams consider these suggestions to prevent ice dams from damaging your home in the future.:
Insulate Attic Floor - one of the main causes of ice dams is to escape the heat in your attic and melt the bottom layer of snow on the roof, which then re -fige when it hits the roof edge. Adding extra insulation to your attic floor can help keep the heat inside your home where it belongs. Not only can this help prevent ice dams, but it is also a great way to save money on your home heating bill
Ventilate the Attic -. Installing additional overhang, soffit, ridge and gable vents will help the flow of cold air throughout your attic. This will keep the snow melting and re-freezing on board your roof
Install Shield Water and Ice -. The water and ice shield is a protective membrane that is usually added to a roof, under shingles, about 3 feet from the roof edge. Having a few extra feet or, preferably, the entire roof covered in this help keep any water that gets under the roof shingles from getting into your house
Heating coils -. heating coils are installed at the edge of the roof and heat to keep melting snow from re-freezing the eaves. There are certain types that can be added to the gutters and to help prevent melting snow freeze in your gutters, eliminating the back-up of ice in the gutter and the roof edge.
