snowmageddon With 2015 still in full effect here in the North, I thought it would perhaps be a good time to explore an important issue for the owners of this time of year: slip and fall claims. Walking around my own neighborhood in Massachusetts, I am amazed at the number of owners who do not take the necessary measures to prevent slipping and falling.
I found some very interesting statistics on the website of the National Floor Safety Institute at www.NFSI.org. For example, did you know:
- Slip and falls are the leading cause of accidents in hotels, restaurants and public buildings and 70 percent occur on flat and level surfaces
- 85? percent of the claims of workers are assigned to employees slipping on smooth floors?
- falls account for 87 percent of all fractures in people over 65 and is the second leading cause of spinal cord and brain injury?
scary stuff, right? As the owner of the property, especially if you are a small business owner, there is an obligation to the public to make walkways and parking safe to cross. the necessary things to have in hand include snow shovels, ice melt to sidewalks, warning wet floor panels and floor mats. And it always helps to have an agreement with a contractor to clear your parking lot and sidewalks for you. As a business owner or owner, constant monitoring of the changing conditions inside and outside should be the top priority. Here in the Northeast, night time brings below freezing temperatures that can turn light mist very smooth ice fast enough.
Slip and falls are inevitable in the winter time, but with some common sense, good judgment, and proactive measures we can all take the time to winter safer.
