A vacation checklist for your home -

6298642-2400x10 graduation ceremonies have come and gone, schools are out, and it's time for that vacation you've been looking forward to for months. We are all anxious to get to our destination, but what can you do before you leave to prepare your home for when you are away?

Stop your mail. The United States Postal Service has a practical application for smartphones, and also offers Hold Mail option on their website under "Manage Mail". Enter your address to check availability online before making your application or visit your post office to complete an application in person Hold Mail.

Stop your newspaper. If you still receive a good old newspaper at home, be sure to ask your operator to stop delivery or ask a neighbor to pick it up for you while you are away. At home, we also receive complimentary newspapers each week on our driveway so do not forget those too!

Place lights on timers. Keep a light or two in your home on a timer time you're elsewhere. Lights in the house give the appearance of a busy home. A dark house can be a welcome sign for thieves.

Consider cutting water sources. Pipes can leak (or burst) when you are away, leaving a mess when you get home. The best place to start is the water in the washer and dryer. One of our adjusters blocks the water for the whole house while they are away to avoid problems.

Tell a neighbor, local authorities, and / or your alarm company that you will be away. Even if you do not expect the mail or newspapers arrive, let a neighbor know that you are away. They can keep an eye on and let you know if anything significant happens when you are away. In some communities, local authorities can be alerted of your absence and will drive by your home periodically.

Set your thermostat. Increase your thermostat so that you do not pay to cool your house while you are away. During the winter, turn down (but not off) the heat so you do not heat your home as much as you need while you are at home.

Arrange to have your grass mowed or snow removed on long journeys. This is explicit!

This list is not intended to be comprehensive. I tend to remember the above items, even for shorter trips. There are many more resources on the web regarding this, and other things that you might consider as :.

  • Ask a friend water your plants
  • Getting a pet sitter or find a boarding facility for your pet.
  • Make sure your bills are paid in advance of your vacation or contact your credit card company to inform them of your plans if you travel to a distant destination.

some other tips are available on the A vacation checklist for your home tip sheet.

Wherever you go, enjoy your trip knowing that your home is safe!
