There may be lucky in the game but it seems September is a lucky number when it comes to holidays. Did you know that holidays in tension or decorative lights start an average of 1 7 0 home structure fires each year? According to the National Fire Protection Association, these fires cause approximately 7 death, 1 7 injuries, and $ 7 .9 million in property damage each year. Christmas should be a time of celebration, not a time to worry about the dangers associated with your decorations. Here are some fire, you should identity and few safety precautions you can take to protect yourself and your family.
The Christmas tree
- For many families, picking the Christmas tree right is an annual tradition. When selecting a tree, make sure that the tree appears with fresh green needles and branches are not easy to pull the tree.
- It is recommended to further reduce two inches of the trunk and keep it watered at all times. There have been tests that show a Christmas tree can ignite and burn completely in less than two minutes, but as this video shows, it can be less than 45 seconds.
- When purchasing an artificial tree, look for a fire resistant label, usually an Underwriters Laboratory "Underwriters Tested" label.
- Place your tree at least three feet from any heat source, including fireplaces, radiators, wood stoves and radiators.
- Do not leave the tree for an extended period after the holidays. fire safety professionals not recommend leaving it in place longer than two weeks and discard it immediately. A dry tree is highly flammable and can still cause significant damage when you are sitting. Check with your local community recycling programs and other disposal options.
