Is your laptop a pain in the neck? -

attractive woman with laptop having neck pain I recently heard the news that more than 50 percent of adults have neck pain during the past year. Hmm ... wonder why?

Outside of work, most people spend time on their laptop surfing the web, emailing, or games. Laptops are great because they are portable and convenient, but they can create ergonomic problems for the user. Users tend to avoid proper posture by sitting cross-legged on the floor or sitting in a chair using their laptop. This can cause injuries especially your neck, and your shoulders, arms, wrists and lower back.

I know I'm guilty of that! Last weekend, I noticed after a few hours watching a TV series on Netflix that I had a stiff neck. Perhaps it was also texting or Facebooking, but regardless, I think it would be beneficial to share some tips on how to reduce this pain in the neck

Here are some basic tips to an ergonomic laptop configuration .:

  • Be aware of your posture. Avoid resting your wrists while typing. Do not bend your wrists while typing. Use movements of the hands and whole arms to navigate the keyboard.
  • Place the laptop on a support or a raised surface. This will help you avoid bending your neck and head forward to see the screen.
  • If you are in an inclined position by using your laptop as your sofa or bed, be sure to support your feet so that your hips and knees to be at a 0 degree angle. This will reduce the pressure on the lower back. You can also use pillows as armrests to reduce strain on your neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Attach an external keyboard and mouse to your laptop. Place them at a height that allows your arms to hang the shoulder and your forearm to extend horizontally to the ground to the keyboard.

  • Take frequent stretch breaks.
