Unfortunately, these storms also bring many roofers, contractors and workers who want all your repair business. When a storm hits a community, these workers move to other cities and other countries to try to win your business. How do you as a consumer to sift through the sales pitches and choose a reputable contractor?
A good place to start is with your friends and neighbors. They are a great resource and can share their own experiences with these people, whether good and bad. You can also consult online resources such as Angie's List, or check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints. If you made an insurance claim for the damage, you can also ask your insurance agent or expert for recommendations.
If your contractor is not in your area, you must be even more diligent in your search. Ask the contractor for references and ask specific questions about their work and their coverage teams. For example, what happens if your roof is leaking six months after the work is finished? The contractor honor the warranty if they are located in another city or state? It's also a good idea to ask if the company has brought their own crews or will they hire day laborers to complete the job. The quality of work is probably better off with a company using its own crew.
