With the unofficial start of the summer last weekend, many of us make vacation plans and heading outside to enjoy the weather. But for those who live in the western part of the United States, this time of year marks the beginning of the season wildfire.

As I write this blog, firefighters near Santa Barbara, California fighting fires that erupted Monday near the National Forest Los Padres. Santa Barbara County Fire Captain David Sadecki was quoted in USA Today saying. "It's still in the spring - it is not even summer - and it's hot as it is August or September"

The Weather Channel lists the footprint of the current national drought to 19%, and a new perspective to the federal drought released last week shows the southwest quadrant of US drought conditions persist or intensify over the next two months.
