The holidays are in full swing and that means lots of holiday parties. These gatherings are great fun, full of good company, bad gifts and good drinks. Most of us have hit a little too hard eggnog at one time or another, but too often, someone will also get behind the wheel. This decision can change the lives of many people in an instant.
drunk driving is a serious problem in America. According to the website Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), there were 9,878 deaths DUI-in 2011. This equates to a DUI-related death every 53 minutes. Add to that the fact that someone is injured every 0 seconds following a DUI-related incident.
Repeat offenders are a problem in the United States. MADD's website says: "About a third of all drivers arrested or convicted for driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence of alcohol are repeat offenders" For example, Massachusetts class 40 . e of 51 states (Washington, DC is listed as a separate entity) for impaired driving. the ranking is based on the number of deaths related to traffic DUI-in every state, with the number having the percentage the lower and the number 51 having the highest percentage. Thirty-six percent of all traffic deaths in Massachusetts are linked DUI. There have been 115 deaths DUI in the most recent year, an increase 8.5 percent compared to the previous year. in comparison, Rhode Island ranks 46 e overall, but there was a decrease of 26 percent of DUI deaths in previous year. According to the most recent figures, there are 22.253 persons who were caught drunk driving three times and 4840 that were taken five times in Massachusetts. Other states that rank worse than Massachusetts in drunken driving statistics are not that high a number of recidivists
Another interesting statistic :. Vermont has one of the lowest-related deaths DUI traffic numbers to 18. While the number death has not changed from 2010 to 2011, the percentage of deaths related to impaired driving rose from 25 percent to 33 percent. Some states have a mandatory ignition interlock effect program where repeat offenders are required to have a breathalyzer system installed in their vehicle. The vehicle can only be started after the driver blows into the device to show that they are under the legal limit for alcohol consumption. Based on the statistics listed above, it slows down the problem. Something more must be done and tougher penalties for repeat offenders is only part of the solution.
The real solution lies with all drivers in America. Make the conscious decision to call a cab or ask a sober friend drive home if you've had too much to drink. This Christmas, drink responsibly and sober driving.
