Busted! Know Your Traffic Stop Etiquette -

Being a volunteer reserve officer in the traffic division to an administrative authority of local law in Colorado is a very rewarding aspect of my life, but also very dangerous. I wanted to share some tips in case you're ever in the unfortunate situation of being fired at a traffic stop

First thing -. Each year, many officers are injured by other motorists while making a traffic stop "routine". The most common problem officers face is distracted drivers; Police motorists become hypnotized by the flashing lights on cars, especially at night, and accidentally hit the officer, causing injuries. Please move to the next lane if it is safe to do so!

Now, if you find that the officer activated his / her emergency lights and siren and tried to shoot you, follow these tips to ensure the safety of everyone:

  • Recognize the order quickly. Signal that you'll stop and do it as soon as you can manage safely.
  • Pull off the road as far as possible or pull in the driveway or the nearest parking. This demonstrates a concern for the safety of the officer.
  • You must turn off your vehicle, but you can leave the keys in the ignition.
  • Once you have stopped your vehicle, stay inside and wait for the officer to approach you. Any sudden movement, if the door or the people in the car, can make uncomfortable officer then tell your passengers to remain seated.
  • If you are stopped after dark, it is encouraged that you turn on the dome light inside your vehicle
  • Try to have your license and registration ready when the officer arrives the car to avoid having to bend over and dig through the glove box - .. that makes us nervous as
  • in states that allow concealed carry, quietly inform the officer that you have a gun in the vehicle and show your hidden transport permit.
  • BE POLITE. Sarcasm and / or crying will not help your situation.
  • BE PATIENT. Once an agent has collected all relevant information from you, he or she will likely return to the police car. The agent has a protocol to follow during a traffic stop that includes a search warrants and verification of your identity in circulation, so there may be some delay before their return.
  • If you officer issues a citation traffic, listen carefully to what he or she says and ask questions if necessary. In most cases, the citation should include a hearing date with a way to waive the court appearance and pay the fine directly. Remember, signing a citation is only a recognition you received the ticket.
  • After being released from the vehicle to stop, signal your intention to enter the floor and make due consideration and only when it is safe to do so.

I hope that you should never use any of these tips, but if you do, remember that the number one goal in mind is that the agent everyone gets home safely to their families. Please drive carefully!
