A car accident is a jarring experience, and most people are often uncertain as to the information to collect from the other party or parties concerned. Accidents are frustrating in nature and lack of relevant information can cause delays in settling your claim that only adds to the frustration. The following is a list of information you should be sure to get after an accident to help ensure a smooth claims process.
- License Information. This should include the full name, license number, date of birth and address of the driver. Make sure you get this information as the owner of the vehicle is not always the driver.
- Registration Information. Note the year, make, model, license plate number, and color of the vehicle and the insurance company if listed. Make sure you look at the vehicle itself to verify that the record belongs to the vehicle involved in the accident. You will also want to take the name and address of the owner listed on the registration if the driver is not the owner.
- Location. Record the location of the accident. Make sure you have the street address if possible or note the landmarks if no house number is available. Be sure to get the names of two streets if you are at an intersection.
- passengers. Write down all passenger names and addresses in the other vehicle. At the very least, be sure you know how many are in the vehicle so you can make your insurance company know. This information may be needed if there is injury to the accident.
Provide this information to your carrier as soon as possible or the insurance agent so they can get the claims process started immediately. More information you can provide, the fewer complications and delays you. And do not forget to provide your driver's license and information to the other party involved so they can get the claims process started at their end as well. Insurance companies talk to each other during a protest, so if one side has the information and the other not, the application may be delayed.
