New bill aims to help brokers doing business on health insurance exchanges -

What is proposed?

Bill 1653 Senate The equalization of the playing field for agents and Broker Act change the Affordable Care Act (ACA) protection of patients and to improve access to independent agents and brokers to information about registration exchange.

The bill would add a broker directory for exchanges and brokers provide access to all registration information provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) . At present, some training materials, such as webinars and newsletters, visit now only exchange browsers and assisters certified .

The bill would also require CMS to create a broker hotline when professionals of health insurance have questions or need help with navigation of the Exchange.

When will we know the result?

At the time of writing, the exact timing is unknown. The committee chair determines whether the bill will pass past the committee stage. If the bill passes the committee, it should be passed by the House and Senate in identical form, and be signed by the President to become law.

Why Broker legislation was introduced?

Brokers play a central role to help individuals understand and enroll in a health insurance individual coverage through the exchange. Yet the ACA exchanges seemed to focus on browsers and assisters more brokers and agents.
