As summer begins and travelers begin from across the country and the abroad, people should stop and think: My health insurance protect me on the road?
Whether you take a short trip with your family or a student going away from home for the summer, the insurance coverage is important for emergencies.
Consider the following:
Your plan covers out-of-network health care providers in the United States?
If your plan covers non-network providers, you will have coverage while traveling across the country. These plans are commonly known as preferred provider organizations (PPOs).
For consumers with Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), these plans do not cover out-of-network costs. However, in emergency situations, health insurers will typically negotiate rates for services. In non-emergency scenarios, waiting to pick up the tab with an HMO.
Does your plan cover you outside the country?
It is quite rare that health plans cover you in case of emergency outside the United States, but consider travel insurance when traveling abroad. Good travel insurance plans cover medical expenses, medical evacuation and reimburse you for travel.
Before purchasing travel insurance, call your health insurance company to see what costs will be covered for emergencies abroad.
There are different needs for different family members.
Not everyone in your family may travel this summer. Focus on coverage for travelers in your family than to have additional coverage that may not be necessary for others. There are students in your family or children who go away to camp, it is good to have health insurance when they will be.
