key Insights
panelists highlighted the key benefits of health technology as well as important issues to keep in mind for the future.
benefits of health technology
- technology facilitates information sharing and collaboration between biopharmaceutical companies, academic researchers, hospitals , physicians and patients to drive future innovations in systems and the provision of health care.
- electronic health records (EHR) capture millions of data points per year which can then be used by clinicians in the time of care to better meet the needs of patients.
- technology such as telehealth enables medical specialists to share their expertise beyond a single practitioner -Patient interaction and can facilitate better engagement between practitioners and patients. Panelist Dr. Roger Ray provided an example of successful telehealth pilot program Carolinas HealthCare System for patients with diabetes
- In the near future, the technology that allows patients access and control of their own comprehensive health data -. Presumably in the palms of their hands - will promote a sense of autonomy and meaningful interaction with health care providers
... We found that if we have patients are really in trouble and we get access. via an iPad and free Wi-Fi in their home and a counselor to interact with them ... at regular intervals, depending on what we see and hear and have a chance to engage with them they do best . - Dr. Roger Ray
The challenges of health technology
- The ease of use of technologies such as DSE was raised as a serious concern, especially the way the administrative requirements on doctors to enter patient data during a visit could harm the doctor-patient interactions.
- technology health is largely developed using closed systems compared with open platform, which can slow future innovation and reduce the capacity of existing systems to adapt to the dynamic technological environment
- Panelist Ed Park noted the limitations of EHR technology using closed systems, saying "you can not really move the [patient] graph from a system to another system. - You are a bit trapped in ... what I fear is health systems are beginning to buy their way into their own prisons that are built from their own information, and the only thing they can do is try expanding prison walls outward rather than dealing with an environment opening where you can actually work with everyone in a consolidated and consistent way. "
- Ensure that government systems such as Medicare, Medicaid and the FDA drug approval process have with advances in technology is essential to enable other health systems to innovate effectively .
despite these concerns, the panel was generally optimistic about the future of health technology and its positive impact on health care delivery systems, practitioners and patients. in addition, the experts noted that the transition from one results incentivizing payment system for long-term health and the health of the population is necessary to stimulate investment in health technology that is easy to use dynamic and meets the needs of a diverse population.
as the landscape of health technology continues to evolve, the competent health care administrators such as MHA @ GW students and alumni will play a crucial role in helping providers navigate the emerging systems and integrate health IT into everyday practice.
