Crawl spaces, sewers, boilers, manholes. People working in confined spaces such as they are exposed to life-threatening physical and atmospheric hazards.

The August 3, 2015, OSHA implemented a new rule on confined spaces for the construction industry. This rule is similar to the general requirements of the industry that have been around for over 20 years, with some slight modifications to make it suitable for the construction. This new standard is intended to prevent injury and death to both the elimination and isolation of the dangers of confined spaces. In fact, OSHA believes the new rule will prevent 800 serious injuries every year.

"This rule will save the lives of construction workers. Unlike most workplaces in general industry, construction sites are constantly evolving, with the number and characteristics confined spaces changing as the work progresses. This rule focuses on training, continuous assessment of the site, and communication requirements to better protect the safety and health of workers "

spaces How are confined Defined

a confined space is one that:

[1945015moyens] has limited input and / or output
  • is large enough for a worker to enter
  • n ' was not designed for regular or continuous occupation

a confined space permit-required meets the defined characteristics of a confined space is one that:

  • has or has potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere
  • contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant
  • has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by converging walls to inside or sloping floor downwards and tapers to a smaller section
  • Contains any safety hazard or serious health recognized

confined spaces where may occur? Examples: manholes, sewers, storm sewers, water pipes, air conditioning ducts, boilers, tanks, wells, tanks, incinerators, drilled wells, pumping stations, and silos

The Standard That requires. ?

This new standard requires employers to determine, by a competent person: what kinds of spaces that employees working in, what the risks may be present, how these risks can be made in any security, what training should be provided to workers, and how to go to rescue a worker. If you have employees who work in confined spaces, take the time to read the final rule to ensure you meet all requirements.

How the new rule Differ From The General Rule industry?

from the general industry, OSHA describes 5 key differences in the new building standard:

  1. more detailed provisions requiring coordinated activities when there are several employers on site. This will ensure the risks are not introduced in a space confined by workers performing tasks outside the space. An example would be a generator operating at the input of a confined space causing an accumulation of carbon monoxide in space.
  2. Require a competent person to assess the work site and identify confined spaces, including spaces allowed.
  3. Require continuous atmospheric monitoring whenever possible.
  4. requiring continuous monitoring of risks sinking. For example, when workers perform work in a storm sewer, storm upstream of workers could cause flash floods. An electronic sensor or an observer posted upstream of the site could alert workers in the area at the first sign of danger, giving time workers to evacuate the space safely.
  5. Given the suspension of a license, instead of cancellation, in case of changes in the list of entry requirements on the permit or an unforeseen event requiring evacuation of the space. The space must be returned to the input conditions on the permit before school starts.
