Let's just rip off the band-aid quickly and tell you first the bad news - health care costs are rising at five times the rate of inflation. What is the good news? As a consumer, there are steps you can take to soften the blow and avoid spending more than you need. Take a look:
1. Always try to go to a health care provider network. Out-of-network providers cost you more, regardless if you have coverage for off-network providers or not.
2. If you have decided to do the surgery, shopping for health care providers by calling doctors and hospitals and ask the cost. Sometimes it may be cheaper to pay in cash or compare hospitals close nearby.
3. Avoid surprises to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist what prescription will cost before fill. If the price is too high, there may be a more affordable form of treatment that your doctor can talk to you.
4. Always ask for generic drugs over brand. Generic prescriptions are generally more affordable than brand.
5. Visit an urgent care center during a visit to the emergency room is preventable. In many countries, a trip to the ER is very expensive and if it is not an emergency, the health insurer may charge the consumer a franchise for the visit (Do not worry - this does occurs when the trip is not necessary).
6. Get vaccines and vaccines against influenza in minute pharmacies or clinics if they are more convenient. This prevents a doctor visit.
7. Use correspondence requirements if you have monthly medication and your health insurance company has a program supply. Many health insurers offer correspondence programs that are more affordable than a visit to a pharmacy every month and will sometimes give orders to three months at a time.
Figure 8. If your health insurer provides grants for gym memberships or premium reductions. For many health insurance companies are now focusing on preventive care, some have started offering incentives and programs for gym memberships and weight loss.
9. Use free preventive care. Due to the reform of health care, preventive care is now free to consumers, which means they are not required to pay a co-payment or deductible. But if the visit for preventive care turns into a tour of a procedure or test that are not considered preventive care, you will receive an invoice for the service.
10. Check your health insurance claims and to contest any claims that you think should be paid by the health insurer. Mistakes are made regarding medical billing. Always check your medical claims online or receive applications by mail and keep records of visits.
