A recent study of 247 primary care physicians in Hawaii found that health IT use does not contribute to the knowledge of the medical costs of prescription drugs. The use of IT is actually hurt the ability of a physician to understand affordability prescription for a patient at a time when the costs of health care are rising.
According to Healthcare IT , more than 0 percent of participating physicians knew no forms and coinsurance, which eventually affected the understanding of prescription costs for patients. Also the study found that 8-10 Physicians use information technology regularly. Of the physicians surveyed: 60 percent used the Internet and 43 percent used electronic health records.
Chien-Wen Tseng, MD, member of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health said: "More specifically, we hoped that doctors who regularly use health information technology in health care clinics have a better knowledge of drug costs. We found that only one in four doctors said they often knew the cost of drugs, and the rates are not much higher even when doctors said they used the internet regularly, electronic medical records and electronic prescribing to patient care. "
The study has implications for all sectors of the health care industry. Electronic medical records are now used across the country and the changes may be required to provide information on doctors requirements at low cost. health insurance companies, health care providers and health iT vendors will all need to work together to understand the problem.
