Illegal immigrants cost the American health care -

U.S.A. at night In the world of health care, health insurance and reform, illegal immigrants have become a hot topic and the talking point for many critics. Much of the debate questions whether illegal immigrants would benefit from any reform that happened.

This topic has received much less media attention over the past month, but Health Affairs published a study that could re-ignite the flame.

The study compared the costs of health care for non-citizen immigrants, legal immigrants and native citizens between 1999 and 06. Shockingly, the results found that illegal immigrants cost the system 50 percent less than the legal citizens.

In addition, legal immigrants the least number of health care costs through public programs such as Health Insurance Program children in Medicaid and State. Overall, the public health care expenditures for legal immigrants is lower than the original American citizens.

Furthermore, non-citizens received care "free" 13 percent of the time in 06, while US citizens of origin constituted only 11 percent of uncompensated care .

But the data are not a surprise, the study suggests, because of the Law on Work Opportunity Reconciliation personal responsibility and which was passed in 1996. This law requires that immigrants living in the States States for at least five years before they can receive Medicaid benefits. Much of the 13 percent likely include illegal immigrants who have not yet reached the five-year threshold.

Both versions of the House and Senate of the proposed health reform law specifically exclude illegal immigrants, but we thought this was an interesting study.
