The boating season is winding in many parts of the country and it is time to start thinking about protecting your precious recreational . Your insurance policy does not cover damage caused by lack of maintenance or neglect to take the necessary steps to winterize your boat will protect the ship and engine against the winter elements. If there is water inside your engine when the temperature drops below zero, the result can be a block or cracked case and a repair bill that runs into the thousands.
Your first step in winterizing should be to make a list of all the tasks that must be accomplished. Please consult your boat and motor or the manufacturer's recommendations on winterization of the owner.
Here are some guidelines, courtesy WikiHow.com to prepare your boat for the cold winter months.
- Fill the fuel tank of your boat about capacity. Leave enough room to expand. Add fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel to deteriorate during the winter.
- Close fuel valves to prevent potentially destructive internal condensation. All passport exhaust ports should be sealed with adhesive tape and the fuel filter and water separator must be replaced.
- Coat the spark plugs. Remove the flame of the motor and oil "shoot" fogging or two cycles in the carburetor when the engine is running. Cut the fuel supply to burn excess fuel. With the engine stops, injecting oil into the cylinders.
- Fill the engine block with antifreeze. Purge any remaining engine coolant from the engine block and the collectors and fill with antifreeze suitable for your boat model.
- Change the oil for motor gears. Flush and replace the lower gear case lubricant if your boat has an inboard / outdrive motor. This keeps the internal components free of water damage.
- Clear the battery and store in a safe, dry place for the winter. The battery must be fully charged when stored. Maintain the charge and maintain the water level while the battery is in storage.
- Inspect the propeller and the hub of your ship. Look for dented or curved blades and general wear. Change damaged parts and make repairs when winterizing your boat.
- Spray the contact points on all plugs and bulb sockets with a displacement of moisture lubricant. Wrap plugs with electrical tape to keep them dry.
- Clean your boat before storing for the winter. Remove surface dirt with a washcloth or sponge.
- Cover your boat, even if it will be stored in a heated garage or other type of storage facility.
The best place for your boat during the winter is out of the water, under cover, in a boat storage area at controlled temperature. However, this can be expensive, so at least do the maintenance steps above to help reduce the possibility of costly repairs to your investment come spring.
