Volunteer Blog: Janis and her experience as a volunteer firefighter - janis

Janis in the water We all understand the importance of our first responders, especially those who volunteer. This is the story of Janis Forbes (Personal Lines)

In 1997, Janis moved to Seba Beach outside Edmonton. She knew no one and did not know the community, but she lived next to the fire department. In recent years, she has seen ads in the call log for volunteer firefighters. Time passed until one day out of nowhere, she got up the nerve and decided to attend a meeting.

She joined the first department as a junior firefighter. There were 16-20 firefighters in the department; while volunteering anywhere from 2-3 hours per week. As a rookie, she did what needed to be done to direct traffic on the roads during extrication to any "rookie" work they could beat him. Meanwhile, a fire broke out in the brick building in Sun Gro Peet Moss. And as the bricks were flying in all directions, she worked to keep people safe and healthy.

In his second year with the department, she started heavy training. Training (called 1001) and is the standard for all professional firefighters - pretty intense stuff. For two years, she has trained, also completing his EMR. His training consisted of burning buildings simulated extrication manikins vehicles and when it came time to show everyone what it was made, his team came second in a firefighter contest.

She describes herself as "the old lady compared to young guns" in the group, but it has proven to be a forced to be reckoned with because, in his fourth year with the department, she held the ranks to captain (. the first woman to do so in his ministry) This was a big problem because Janis was unresponsive to commands; she was the one making them! She has more control traffic, it was life and death decisions.

During his time as captain there was a huge forest fire near Highway 16 near Gainford. She was new in his role; she was senior and the fire jumped the road. Remaining composure, she concentrated on the provision of appropriate orders immediately and called in other departments to help. Although the fire was aggressive, they do not lose buildings - not even a house! That summer, she recalled meet almost daily to calls. They responded to accidents, fires and accidents in coal mine

She recalled that during the time she was first involved the "jaws of life" was so large and heavy that men should use them. women were generally not strong enough to handle them. But that does not stop responding to sudden accidents and providing comfort and calm during the tragedy. In 09 she received an award for an incredible 10 years of volunteer work. During her time, she helped found more than 100 fires and responded to over 100 accidents per year. She even helped at the CN derailment at Wabamun Lake (Oil tanks in the water, they were the first responders ;. Nobody was hurt)

You may ask "why would -it get involved in volunteer work like this? "

Adrenaline.

as a former nurse, she was not fazed by high stress, tragic situations." You must be a little bossy, "she said; saying the two friends and colleagues describe her as authoritarian. But what has also helped to succeed in her volunteer role was his dedication, the ability to remain emotionally strong in difficult situations and a thirst to absorb every bit of training and resources offered. However, she believes that everyone who wants to volunteer as a firefighter must. And said: "If I can do it, anyone can" (Although some would probably say that!)

Highlights of his volunteer experience include the response to CN derailment rail, the great! fire jumped the highway and help STARS earth several times (. it was during his childhood) and when asked the highlight of his volunteer experience, she replied: "No link people as you can. never do with others that could be as strong as those who are the first responders. There are things you see and do together that nobody can understand. "
