If you live in Alberta, you know that winters can get a little hairy: cold temperatures, lots of snow and ice. But after two weeks of unusual warm temperatures in Calgary, there is no shortage of treacherous driving conditions on city sidewalks. According to the Calgary Herald, between January 12 and January 25, the city received more than 3,500 complaints calls for snow and ice, as well as more than 1,000 complaints through their website and application. (Keep in mind that, according to the City of Calgary regulations, it is the responsibility of the owners of sidewalks and pathways clear within 24 hours after the snow stops falling.)
Here the process of the city takes case of complaint:
- They will make contact with the owner about the complaint and issue a warning.
- If the sidewalk is not cleared within 24 hours of the warning, the city will clear and invoice for the work.
problem in Calgary is not so much snow (right now), it is the ice that has built between thawing during hot temperatures and frost.
Here are some recommendations for homeowners:
- Do your best (and what is reasonable) to clear your sidewalk
- Use 'pickle' (mixture salt / sand) on your curb. to assist in traction. It is available in most fire stations in the city (free)
- If you know that your neighbors are struggling to obtain due to the mobility, age, etc., become a "Snow Angel "and help them out.
- If you can not keep your sidewalk clear because of the time, hire someone who can. [1945006personnes] We also saw the use of rubber mats in particularly dangerous areas.
It is important to remember that as the owner, you are obliged to take all reasonable steps to ensure your sidewalks safe for pedestrians. If someone falls, is seriously injured and wants to pursue a legal route, one of the first questions will be if you (as the owner) has taken all reasonable precautions to ensure the sidewalk was cleared appropriately.
