What about your home insurance
'Tis the season for a winter getaway ?! You and family traveling to the sunny beaches of Cancun or staying with dear Agnes grandmum Canmore - many of us spend a few days or weeks away from our usual home for the winter holidays. Of course, before leaving for the trip, you make sure that your travel insurance papers are in order, someone's dog sitting your furry friend, and your friendly neighbor collect your mail. With all these efforts, we hope he has not forgotten something, maybe a toothbrush at worst.
However, many of us have forgotten or completely ignore this trip during the winter holidays can mean to our existing home insurance policy - and its guarantees. Or more precisely when coverage is available and when it is not.
refersWinter holidays usually to cold Canadian winters that we all love or fear. So many industries, including the insurance industry refer to this as the "heating season". This term is referenced in almost all standard homeowners insurance policies with reference to a potential risk of damage of water. Plumbing pipes and bursting of the "usual heating season" (also known as a typical Canadian winter), is not unknown.
According to March 1, 2014 Press Release (http://www.avivacanada.com/article~~number=plural / media-release-Mar-25-2014) by one of the largest insurers Canadian owners: Aviva insurance Company Canada, claims for water damage (including all types insured) accounted for 51% of all property losses for the previous year claims of insurers.
as such, the water damage caused by frozen pipes and plumbing during "normal heating" system is considered preventable. Although there is a cover for this risk in the most comprehensive homeowners policy - strictly indicated in virtually all policies under its insurance policies to limit coverage in this typical formulation:
water damage ...
but we (insurance company) does not insure loss or damage, I. caused by frost during the usual heating season
1. in a heated part of your home if you (the policyholder) have been away from your premises for more than __ consecutive days, but you will always be assured if you took one of following precautions:
- had your home protected by a controlled heating alarm that is connected to a station providing a 24 hour service to ensure that the heating is maintained,
- arranged for a competent person to come into your home every day ___ while you were away to ensure that the heating was continued, or
- cut off the water supply and had drained all the pipes and domestic water containers;
2. in an unheated part of your home;
All insurance companies describe extensively in the policies they offer you their policyholders. The first pages are so-called "declarations page" - this is what most people are familiar with. It describes the name, address, the built boundary of the policyholder and various other covers and limits to discuss between you and your broker / agent. The rest of the policy (usually a few dozen pages worth) insurance agreements and legal requirements. These agreements ensure discuss the insured objects, and dangers exclusions- including when a risk is covered and under what circumstances (as described above).
Many political list four (4) consecutive days away from the premises, but some can be as little as 2. Another point of discussion is that we should be far from that given time, the most policies require a "competent person" to enter and ensure the housing is to be sufficiently heated or undamaged every day -. while some may allow all two or three days
It is important to observe and examine all parts of a policy, but when you leave the household during the "heating season of habit, "as many of us do for the winter holidays - it is essential to consider this part of the policy to ensure that self, as the insured, shall take all precautionary measures to ensure water damage covers the policy will not be canceled while you are away for the winter holidays
.So what does this mean for you?
First, as lessee, if one of the above information is unclear or unknown track your broker or agent to help clarify and understand this vital coverage and any limitations under your policy owner before leaving for the winter holidays.
then, take these precautions during the time away from home to help avoid some stress and preventable situation claim water damage due the gel, and other potential claims.
Bon voyage and happy holiday
