"Claiming that you do not care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you do not care about freedom of expression because you have nothing to say "-Edward Snowden
We all look cyber security from different angles, such as those planning to bypass security measures. A big misconception is that we ourselves or "big brother" to protect obtain our personal information. The truth is, we give willingly with our knowledge to do it every time we say "I agree" or "I agree" to the software that we install, the websites that we are members, and implicitly when we participate in the vast playground that is science and technology. There are simply not avoid. the misfortune of this difficult battle that we protect the bad threats. everything we touch and everywhere we go with our computers or phones leaves a fingerprint behind to fight against this, people have turned to proxy services that may have heard on the news such as TOR -.. the Onion Router and the Web Deep
Big Brother, the government and organizations can get your information through the most basic forms of personal safety, we often give that allow us to be so easily compromise on the digital frontier. As new technology emerges, it is natural to turn to the most frightening aspects of the danger, and ask themselves "Is this a new way to be exposed?". The much greater threat are large organizations that collect our personal data are those who leave the biggest holes in personal security, ourselves. We are our own biggest threat of cyber.
We all know it is good to lock our house Wi-Fi, but how many times have we lock the phone or computer? How many people reading this right now with a phone that has Wi-Fi service on and not connected to a network, or even at any time every day? Did you know that while your Wi-Fi is turned on but not connected your device is transmitted in the clear list of all networks that he "remembered"?
A non-connected wireless end, such as your phone, make a list from top to bottom and starting right at the top again. Everything that happens is a wireless version of shouting "hey,
What can we do to prevent such a simple feat? Well, other than to turn your Wi-Fi disabled on PCs and phones when you do not use it there are phones out there that have what is called the "conscience of location". This means that the phone will use GPS services to determine an area that you know has Wi-Fi, such as home or office. This way, your device will switch Wi-Fi or off so it will never be in an area where it will be posted to connect. Such a simple feature, protects the largest hole in the security of the personal network. Now, the common argument that we can hear when this suggestion is why I made a point about Big Brother watching.
"If I leave my phone to use location services people can look where I am!". The funny thing about this argument is that you allow is for you to see where you are. Your position will still be available to those interested as long as you are connected to a tower or the Internet. However, while using this service, we are so skeptical about, we can prevent those who mean to collect more than our age, gender, where we shop etc ... Those who would like that information can the obtain, or already have. The idea is to stop those who would collect your mail passwords, banking information online and things that can be exploited just by watching 30 minutes of internet traffic.
This does not mean that one causes outweighs the other. It's just that the belief that the goal is to stop large organizations to collect information with our personal awareness of cyber battle is lost without a much larger social reform, which may come one day. But until then let's not forget about the little guys.
