What publications and organizations you could recommend for someone who is curious about a career in health administration?

First of all is the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). For my money, KFF has the best set of impartial resources there - their research and analysis is solid. They are really, really good. So if you want information - certainly on the way the CBA is set up, and many other interesting topics - I think this movement to place. For years, Kaiser Permanente has been considered a second-rate organization providing second-rate drugs, and it is not that way anymore. I grew up in Southern California, where Kaiser was a big deal, and they were very derogatory words spoken -. Again, not much more

How technology is changing the way we prepare the future health administrators?

The thing I keep in mind is that technology is a tool. This is not an end in itself. I remember some years ago there was a little slogan I wrote my doctoral thesis on the diffusion of medical technology in California "Computers are great to help you make your errors more quickly." South clinically technology is something I'm really interested in, but not the be-all-end-all. It's something we can use to do our jobs better, and for me, the basic return to something we talked about earlier -. That health care is really a people business

[health care] is about relationships. It is an interpersonal business. And when we forget that - when we use technology as a substitute for people skills -. That is when we start to get into trouble

I never want to go back to the days when everything was a doctor at his or her disposal was a tongue depressor and a stethoscope. I'm not interested in returning to those days. I think technology - clinical and information - is vital and a must have. The question is: How is it used the most appropriate? And we use technology simply because it's there? I want to ensure that we use technology, however, it is used in a way that helps us make better decisions, and we are ultimately doing the right thing for patients.

What pieces of advice that you would offer a health administrator at the beginning of their careers? A professional midterm?

The thing I would say to these two groups is that you do not know what you do not know. Those starting have to use what they learned in grad school simply as a foundation and understand that their real learning is about to begin their career unfolds. A master's degree is an excellent starting point, but a point not by any means end. They really need to become professional students -. And do not forget how to learn

For someone who is a little further, my advice is to remember why you're in this business. Health care is difficult. This is a tough line of work. People are compensated well enough, so the economy are usually not the issue. But this is a hard, demanding line of work. We expect a lot of people in health care, and people can get burned. I would just remind those who are mid-career and to ask why they got into health care in the first place. And this brings us back to that feeling on purpose, useful work and make a difference. People need to think about how they can take care of themselves as their careers evolve, as they begin to think about families and children and aging parents.

People like to talk about work-life balance. I think this is a misnomer. Instead, we should call a work-life mix because sometimes this mix will change over time.

Health care is just a consuming thing. This is not only a job 9 to 5 where you can enter, do your thing and leave. Health care appeals to you it becomes a vocation. it becomes a passion; it becomes a sense of self.

And to be prepared for everyone.

As the landscape of healthcare is changing and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act progresses, many wonder what lies ahead for the health care system in the States -United. Recently, the Atlantic brought together leaders in medicine, public health and finance for AtlanticLIVE Healthcare Forum to discuss issues related to health law and obstacles facing the reform of health care . Experts on "Building a better health care system" Panel reviewed the current challenges of the health care system and possible solutions, the progress of the Affordable Care Act is to reform the system and influence the emerging health IT.

Steve Clemons Atlantic served as moderator of the panel. Clemons is Washington Editor in general for the Atlantic and AtlanticLIVE editor, where he writes about politics and foreign affairs. He is also principal investigator and founder of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation.

Dr. James L. Madara is the current CEO and executive vice president of the American Medical Association (AMA) and assistant professor of pathology at the Feinberg School of Medicine from Northwestern University. Dr. Madara has earned national and international acclaim for its more than 0 original publications and has been named one of the most influential physician executives in the nation by Modern Healthcare .

Dr. Sam Nussbaum is the executive vice president and medical director of WellPoint, Inc. He oversees the programs of the public health policy of WellPoint, clinical quality programs medical policy and corporate pharmacy. Dr. Nussbaum is working to improve patient care through collaboration with industry leaders, doctors, hospitals and political organizations and national healthcare.

Dr. Kavita Patel Merkin's a boy for reform of finance and clinical leadership, managing director for clinical transformation and delivery to the Engelberg Center for Healthcare Reform and principal investigator in economic studies at the Brookings Institution. She was senior adviser to President Barack Obama that the former director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs policy and public participation in the White House. In this role, Dr. Patel was critical for the development and evaluation of policy initiatives related to the reform of health care.

The challenges of the current health system

  • The health care system must shift from a focus on the treatment of acute illness and the rather emphasis on chronic disease prevention. One way in which healthcare organizations can facilitate this change is in partnership with community organizations to participate in health programs and wellness. Dr. Madara said the partnership with the YMCA WADA diabetes as an example of prevention, noting the community organization has a reach beyond medical facilities that is well suited for health programs and well-being.
  • professional training of medical students is mainly determined by the time spent in school rather than measures of competence, which can inhibit new doctors to become adequately prepared to treat common diseases. The transition to assessments based on the skills required.

The Affordable Care Act

  • Big data can help eliminate practices that are wasteful, poor or not scientifically proven to create funds that can be invested in innovation for the future.
  • While electronic medical records have made improvements in some health systems, technology continues to evolve to best meet the needs of patients and care practitioner with guide. For example, Dr. Nussbaum explained how WellPoint "takes our vast amount of data and is delivered at the point of care" to alert potential gaps providers in patient care such as drug interactions or prevention services during the patient-provider interaction.

Final Takeaways

Some Final Thoughts panelists:

  • Although access to health care and insurance increased with the implementation of the affordable care Act, Dr. Patel warned that it is important to recognize the access gaps that remain, particularly among undocumented workers and immigrant populations .
  • Health technology continues to evolve and has the potential to deliver more efficient health care more accessible to patients through innovations ranging from telehealth to "intelligent systems" for glucose levels monitoring at home and delivering diabetes management messages via smartphones.

All panelists agreed that the care system health is unsustainable in its current state, but the implementation of the Law on affordable care and IT health advances are moving health care before significantly. professionals such as public health MHA @ GW students and graduates will play an essential role in the evolution towards a more technologically advanced health care system that focuses on prevention. Dr. Nussbaum said, "Four billion people worldwide lack access to health care by doctors, but they have iPhones." Although this access is an excellent opportunity to improve public health, questions remain on issues like equal access, cost effectiveness and health literacy issues.

Healthcare Administration Fellowships The Master of health administration (MHA) degree is designed to train executives and managers of health care organizations. Students of MHA programs focus on the development leadership and business management skills that are required for health care systems based on the market. Unlike a medical degree, the MHA is focused on the delivery of health care services rather than treatment of disease. In fact, the MHA is more like the MBA degree, with an emphasis on managing the health care business. The degree typically requires two years to complete and is offered in both on campus and online. In general, the courses for the degree focuses on the administration of health care services and medical informatics, finance, economics, law and ethics.

Health Administration scholarships require applicants to have completed a graduate degree, usually a HA or a health care MBA. Healthcare Administration grants are for two-year programs that offer real world experience in hospitals and health care systems as fellows work side by side with high-level executives. By completing special projects and rotational assignments in various departments, fellows have the opportunity to revive a career as part of the health care system or CEO. Whether you're suffering from a fracture or a life-threatening illness, a trip to the emergency room is always a frightening prospect. But what happens when an ER is faced with more patients than it can accommodate? Between 1995 and 2010, the annual emergency visits in the US increased 34 percent, while the number of hospitals with ERs decreased by 11 percent. Long waiting times at exorbitant medical expenses, overcrowding in the ER puts undue pressure on patients, providers and administrators when effective care and high quality that matters most.

MHA Immersion Alumni Panel students attending the first MHA @ GW immersion had many opportunities to learn from professors and the other, but on Saturday panel also allowed students to hear directly from elders who have become leaders in the field of health administration. The panel, moderated by MHA @ GW Director Leonard Friedman program, discussed the establishment of relations, the importance of strong mentoring programs and common problems encountered by non-clinical professionals working in clinical settings.

So what good leadership looks like in the field of health care? Here's what our experts have to say

About the panelists

Fred L. Brown , President, Fred L. Brown & Associates LLC. Brown's health care career spans 50 years. A defender noted for hospitals in America, and health care organizations, he held several management positions. He is currently president of Fred L. Brown & Associates LLC, an international consulting firm, and Chairman of the Advisory Board for Santa Rosa Holdings Inc. He was Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Joint Commission, former president of the National Kidney Foundation and former president of the American Hospital Association. He was inducted Health Care Hall of Fame Modern Healthcare in 2014. He holds an MBA from George Washington University.

Kerry Ann Hayon , Manager, physician practice Resource Center, Massachusetts Medical Society: Hayon, who holds an MBA in healthcare George Washington University, brings over 10 years of consulting, hospital administration and management experience in medical practice medical Society, which provides information, support and resources to physicians and practice administrators. Throughout his 30 year career, he has gained extensive experience in the industry, leading health care systems, providing strategic advice for hospitals and physician groups and lead the development efforts of the solution.

The discussion

Relationships, relationships, relationships

The panelists agreed that health care requires a unique breed of leadership that based on an ability to navigate and manage relationships. "You really know who you are and what kind of person you are," said Brown, who became president of the Christian Hospital Northeast-Northwest 708-bed St. Louis when he was still in his 30s. "When you're dealing with a person on the table, you must understand that they provide value, and you have to respect that," Brown explained.

"Management and leadership is all about relationships "tailgate agreed." We are not in a time when there are many layers [in the health care workplace] ... most people are in other departments you have no control. So how do you do that? You manage relationships. "

Remember the first patient

The panelists urged students to identify mentors, both inside and outside their organizations, and take advantage of opportunities to mentor other. Our health care system current ascends the result of King v. Burwell. The US Supreme Court landmark concerns an essential element of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that give millions of Americans in low and middle income and ability to pay for health coverage . This year 11.4 million people subscribed to the private health insurance through exchanges of state and federal. If the Supreme Court of the United States strike the provision on the tax credit, approximately 8.2 million people in 34 countries at risk of losing their insurance coverage. As a result, premiums are likely to increase for those who are insured while an estimated $ 22 billion lower spending uninsured patients could support the entire health care system. Oral arguments in King v. Burwell begin today, March 4, and a decision is likely by the end of June.

King v. Burwell, however, are not the sole directors of the case of health should follow. King v Burwell

Background :. available tax credit of ACA allows low-income subsidies and those who purchase health insurance on the exchanges state-run middle income. The federal government has set up exchanges in states that have failed to create their own. Sara Rosenbaum Take Professor Rosenbaum: . Nearly all the people who are registered through an exchange receive subsidies and a decision in favor of the plaintiff would mean that millions of people would lose their subsidies. If they lose their subsidies, they would not be able to afford coverage. Insurance companies would immediately have to increase their rates by almost 50 percent just to stay solvent, and, of course, nobody would buy these higher rates. The insurance industry would withdraw from states that do not have subsidies, and literally disappear in the insurance market. There would be no individual left the insurance market.

For health care providers, the results would be catastrophic, particularly for hospitals that have seen an extraordinary relief in the wake of the Affordable Care Act. If, suddenly, there was no expansion of Medicaid and no subsidies markets, then all the gains of these hospitals have seen would be reversed. And the same is true for other types of vendors: for medical offices, health centers and the pharmaceutical industry. Any part of the health care industry that depends on the insurance as a payment mechanism looks at this case and includes the enormous gravity of it

Armstrong v Exceptional Child Center

.. Background: the federal Medicaid Act requires states to pay suppliers Medicaid reasonable rates for their services. Idaho cited budgetary reasons for refusing to raise Medicaid reimbursement rates despite acknowledging that the reimbursement rates are lower than the suppliers incur costs for treating Medicaid eligible patients. The Supreme Court will decide whether the supremacy clause of the US Constitution, which gives federal law precedence over state law, provides suppliers the right to sue the state Medicaid program under the federal law.

Take Professor Rosenbaum: What is at stake here is the ability of health care providers, hospitals, nursing homes and rural health centers to go to the court. When all else fails and a health care provider can not obtain the agency or the state legislature to address the issue and the federal government does not do anything, can the health care provider to court to have the matter reviewed? It is not a promise that the health care provider will win. It's just the fundamental question: are the doors of the courthouse open for you

It is possible that the court will say that the Congress did not specify ability of a supplier to go court, and the provider will be left potentially with no recourse. It is not known how low Medicaid payment rates could fall state, and it is also unclear whether the suppliers begin to sue the federal government over. If this happens, they argue that the federal government has essentially allowed an illegal contact to take place and fails to meet its obligations for implementing the federal law. But getting the federal government to enforce the law is difficult because of a principle known as prosecutorial discretion. The government has a lot of latitude to decide whether or not to apply a law or how to go about enforcing it. This could leave the providers and recipients no real cure in the case of Medicaid payments to standards. At a time when we have 70 million people on Medicaid, this is a real problem.

Council in North Carolina dental examiners v Federal Trade Commission

Background: .. the Office of dental examiners North Carolina State is a state agency that has the statutory authority to stop individuals from practicing dentistry without a license. The board has sent cease and desist letters to several non-dentists who offered teeth-whitening services in spas and shopping center kiosks, which have had the desired effect of banning everyone but dentists to offer these services whitening teeth profit. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the council of unfair competition, and the board argued that it was exempt from antitrust laws. The Court of the United States ruled that the appeal board is managed by market participants - dentists elect other dentists on the board - it is considered a private actor is governed by the federal antitrust laws. The Supreme Court of the United States decided that the shares in the company amounted to illegal suppression of competition

Take Professor Rosenbaum :. This is a very interesting case, and there are people who say it is the most important case of the term because of its long-term consequences for health care and health policy.

So, what is the consequence of the decision? Just because the licensing boards have the ability to regulate medical practice in a state does not mean they can do what they want. They must act in order to continue the clear interest of the state as expressed by the state. For example, a State Council introduced restrictions on hospital practices that are made in the name of quality (but redacted melts through a regulatory process), or going after some hospitals for violating standards board 'administration. Without a strong regulatory framework, a medical provider can not assume that this advice comes with the action of the state. So in essence, this case gives a very high bar for public councils acting with the imprimatur of a state. If you are a Council of State, it is better to pay attention to this case and the way you conduct your business. Recently, the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University welcomed more than 20 new students on campus for an intensive three-day course on leadership and ethics, led by Director Dr program . Reflection on new knowledge and ethics in health care


to kick off the final immersion day, Professor Ricky Allen took a few moments to reflect on the past few days by addressing the persistent questions of the students about leadership. The delicate matter of situational leadership - in which a manager uses different leadership styles based on a specific scenario - was a topic on a lot of students' minds. Professor Allen reminded the class that, like any other skill, it takes practice to real life.

The last session of the immersion on the ethics of health care has attracted the most enthusiastic discussions and valuable weekend. "Ethics is not a pretty subject, but it is something that is very, very serious," said Professor Allen. "And we have included in the immersion on leadership rather than a module because it . is a thread that runs through everything you do "

Because medical professionals are so many decisions that significantly affect the lives of people, the class explored the subject through several lenses, identification and resolution of ethical issues , administrative and biomedical ethical issues, ethical issues that came to the front with the increasing use of technology in health care. The discussion was very theoretical and turn deeply personal turn as students shared their relevant experiences.

Professor Allen and Dr. Friedman both noticed the passionate nature of the debate. "We could not make this session on the first day," said Dr. Friedman. "Because this discussion requires an extremely high level of confidence."

"Everyone here is a leader."

As the immersion ended, teachers and students took a moment to say thank you to the other. Many were surprised to see how they had become in just three days. "I feel like everyone here is a leader," said Kendra Fascilli. "Everyone was very down to earth, very collaborative. I would ask anyone here a personal or professional issue. "Student Cristeta Smith agreed," I am close to people very quickly, and the structure was conducive to collaboration. "

Others said that immersion has opened to new ways of thinking. "I think it was amazing," said the student Daphne Pierre-Paul. "Diversity is nice. It was nice to be with people who are totally different things. I think that was my part MBTI favorite. It's all about finding people who can complement you and complement each other. "

Student Jeffrey Orr said that come to campus reinforced his sense of belonging to the GW community. "It has really improved the experience of returning to school. It made me feel like a part of something," he said.
